Japanese Standard JIS Piping and Fittings Foreign Trade System

The JIS Japanese-standard pipe and pipe fitting system is widely used in Japan itself, Japanese-funded overseas factories, Southeast Asian chemical, power station, and ship engineering projects. It adopts the A nominal diameter and K-class pressure system. Its core standards include JIS B2311 butt-welded pipe fittings and JIS B2220 steel flanges, together with matching JIS steel grades, forming an independent dimensional and inspection system. This article explains the JIS system framework, basic parameters, and manufacturing and inspection requirements, compares the technical differences between JIS and American and European standards, sorts out the key points of foreign trade procurement, document delivery, and acceptance control, identifies selection and matching pitfalls, and provides technical guidance for domestic pipe fitting enterprises undertaking Japanese-standard export orders, so as to avoid foreign trade risks such as dimensional incompatibility and non-compliant material certificates.

The Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) piping and fittings system is an important technical specification in the industrial piping field in the Asia-Pacific region, and is widely used in Japan's domestic infrastructure, ships, chemical plants, and power plants, as well as in Japanese-funded EPC projects in Southeast Asia and China.Domestic piping and fittings enterprises are receiving an increasing number of JIS foreign trade orders year by year, but in practice, sales personnel easily equate the JIS system simply with ASME or EN standards, mistakenly believing that similar nominal diameters are interchangeable, and ignoring JIS's independent outside diameters, flange bolt holes, K pressure ratings, material certificates, and marking specifications, resulting in assembly misalignment after product completion, rejection during supervision, and delivery delays and claim losses.

The JIS piping and fittings system is divided into product standards for piping components, raw material steel standards, and inspection, testing, and marking specifications. The core product standard JIS B2311 covers steel butt-welding fittings for general piping, including elbows, tees, reducers, and caps;JIS B2220 specifies steel pipe flanges, with pressure ratings including 5K, 10K, 16K, 20K, 30K, 40K, and 63K; K represents the kilogram-force rating, and 10K is approximately equal to 1.0 MPa.Raw materials follow the JIS G series steel standards, with commonly used carbon steel STPG and stainless steel SUS304 and SUS316L; material certificates must meet the JIS G0415 inspection document specification, and Japanese-funded owners generally require complete material traceability documentation.

The JIS system uses A nominal diameter markings, such as 10A, 50A, and 100A, corresponding to nominal diameter DN.The outside diameters of its fittings and flanges, flange bolt circle diameters, and bolt hole arrangements form an independent system and cannot be directly interchanged with ASME, EN, or GOST flanges.Even if the A caliber and K pressure rating are similar to the nominal parameters of other standards, the flange sealing face and bolt hole diameter differ, and forced assembly will result in sealing leakage. The pressure rating K is the nominal pressure at room temperature. As the temperature rises, the allowable stress of the material decreases, and pressure derating must be carried out in accordance with the JIS standard. The K value must not be directly equated with the PN or Class rating. This is a high-frequency error point in foreign trade selection.

At the manufacturing and inspection level, JIS forming processes for welded pipe fittings include push forming and forging. After forming, the wall thickness reduction is checked. For cold-formed pipe fittings, whether stress relief heat treatment is required is determined based on the material grade and the amount of deformation.Non-destructive testing is carried out in accordance with the JIS corresponding ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, and penetrant standards, and the inspection ratio is determined by the hazard level of the project medium and the pressure rating. The hydrostatic test is carried out according to the technical agreement of the project. Japanese-funded high-pressure process projects usually require piece-by-piece hydrostatic testing. The product body needs permanent steel stamp markings indicating the standard number, A caliber, K pressure rating, material grade, and heat number. The heat number is transferred throughout the entire process to achieve complete traceability from raw material to finished product.

In the full-process control of foreign trade procurement, the RFQ inquiry document must clearly state the applicable JIS standard version, A nominal caliber, K pressure rating, material grade, inspection items, material certificate type, and marking requirements. At the supplier evaluation stage, it is necessary to verify the manufacturer's similar export performance for JIS pipe fittings, heat treatment capability, and the qualifications of non-destructive testing personnel. The contract technical agreement locks down all technical terms and distinguishes the inspection differences between general piping and high-pressure process piping.Production supervision focuses on verifying flange bolt hole positions, fitting outer dimensions, wall thickness after forming, and material documentation.Delivery documents include JIS material certificates, heat treatment reports, non-destructive testing records, and dimensional inspection reports; certificate documents often require Japanese or Japanese with an English translation attached.

There are significant differences between JIS and American and European standards. For nominal designation, JIS uses A, ASME uses NPS, and EN uses DN;For pressure systems, JIS adopts the K grade, ASME uses Class, and EN uses PN;Flange dimensions are completely independent and not interchangeable; The material grade naming systems are different; SUS series stainless steels are not equivalent to ASTM stainless steel grades.Common misconceptions in foreign trade business: directly equating 10K with Class150;mixing A caliber and DN directly;interchanging JIS flanges with European standard flanges;providing only simple Chinese translations of material certificates, which do not meet the documentation requirements of Japanese-funded owners.

In the current foreign trade market for Japanese standard pipes and fittings, order demand remains stable as Japanese-funded factories in Southeast Asia expand.Japanese-funded owners have strict requirements for product consistency, material traceability, and completeness of inspection documentation, and they value process supervision. When domestic fitting enterprises undertake JIS foreign trade orders, they need to thoroughly understand the core clauses of JIS B2311 and JIS B2220, establish dedicated JIS production and inspection control processes, and lock down all technical parameters at the inquiry stage to avoid mixing standards. If enterprises fully master the JIS pipe and fitting foreign trade system, they can reduce the risk of rejection during acceptance and steadily develop the supporting market for Japanese-funded projects in Japan and Southeast Asia.
